This keynote presentation will review the evidence on the prevalence of trauma for young children and their families, including intimate partner violence and child maltreatment. The consequences of traumatic experiences for children and parents will be addressed, with an emphasis on impacts for brain development and mental health. Finally, evidence-based interventions for buffering children against the effects of trauma will be presented, as well as strategies for creating trauma-informed systems to identify and intervene with affected children and families.
