Dr. Charles Raison has been quoted to say that “one generation full of deeply loving parents would change the brain of the next generation, and the world.” When the parents of vulnerable young children so clearly carry past effects of their own toxic stress and trauma into the present, how do we begin to effect this change? A trauma informed lens helps us understand children’s needs, but unless we also turn that lens on the parent, we miss the opportunity to break the cycle. This session will examine patterns of behavior commonly seen when parents have a trauma history, and how their parenting is affected; suggest a trauma informed response, and review interventions that show promise
