New research concerning the impact of multiple risk factors on young children’s development, differences in how parents speak to and interact with their children, and the effects of poverty on children’s brain growth makes it more important than ever to develop and evaluate new models of intervention. The Buffett Early Childhood Institute’s Achievement Gap Challenge reflects this research and focuses on the school as a hub for services to children, families, teachers, and caregivers from birth onwards. This presentation will address how early care and education from birth – Grade 3 can launch children on a positive trajectory in life, emphasizing that the primary engine of change in early childhood is the quality of interactions between children and their caregivers.
